Urgent Need for Jr BA

Urgent Need: A person for 3-6 months on contract. The nature and scope of the work is more Jr BA than Sr BA

Context: We are a Market Research firm, and the research studies we do each have their own set of specifications associated with everything from the size and shape of sample, to the questionnaire that structures the interviews, to the nature of analysis and reporting to our clients on the results of the research study. Continue reading

We are currently implementing a new technology that supports our end to end market research study activities and outcomes

The Problem:   The specifications (eg; sample, survey structure, frequency, duration, reporting outcomes, etc) for each survey are not presently structured in a consistent way .. the content and format of each survey’s documentation is different.

The Objective:  We want to use the “opportunity” of this new technology implementation (where we are migrating every study we presently do, from the current technology to the new technology platform) to create a standard Requirements Document (aka specifications) for each study.

The Need:  A Junior or Mid-level BA who excels in Documentation.

A self starter who can work effectively to gather and interpret various different forms of existing documentation and translate onto a standard format Requirements Document.

The need for process development, new requirements elicitation, facilitation and dealing with ambiguity IS LOW.

The need for precision, high quality / concise documentation, organization and effectiveness IS HIGH

We expect that the market rate for this role would be in the order of $40k annual … Our preferred approach would be to engage the person on contract with salary prorated to the expected 3-4 month duration.

I will also entertain a person who may prefer to work as an incorporated hourly format.

The audience will then vote on the topics that interest them most. This will be fun and engaging, not a simple show-of-hands – even the voting process contains networking. Continue reading

The top 2 topics will immediately begin in parallel as 30-minute sessions. Next, a short break, then topics 3 & 4 in parallel. If you don’t like the session you voted yourself into, vote again with your feet and move to the other session.

Important Changes to the Sheridan Business Analysis Certificate

CarbonNYC_NEW_ExclamationSheridan is happy announce some changes to the Business Analysis Certificate that improve the flexibility for students to customize the program to meet their career and learning objectives.  Continue reading

Understanding the Changes

The old program consisted of six mandatory 42-hour courses.  The courses in the old program were:

  • MGMT70012 Business Analysis Introduction
  • MGMT79001 Fundamentals of Project Management
  • MGMT70014 Business Facilitation and Communication
  • MGMT70015 Business Process Modeling and Improvement
  • MGMT70013 Enterprise Analysis and Solutions Assessment Engagements
  • MGMT70016 Managing Requirements and Engagements (formerly Business Requirements Management)

The new program structure includes five compulsory 42-hour courses:

In addition, students must complete two 21-hour courses from the following list of electives:

This keeps the overall program length the same, while creating some options for students.

MGMT70013 Enterprise Analysis and Solutions Assessment Engagements is being discontinued.  Students who previously completed this course will be recognized and are not required to complete any 21-hour electives.  This course is also being offered one last time, through online delivery, in Spring 2014.

Reasoning for the Changes

In considering these changes, Sheridan sought input from industry and students.  Some of the factors that lead to these changes were:

  • Student feedback on MGMT70013 was that it was a “course divided” into two major topics.  Some students were interested in one topic but not the other.
  • We have a wide variety of student profiles and backgrounds in the program.  Offering elective courses allows student to focus on the skills that are most relevant to their goals.
  • We are making the program better aligned with trends in industry and at the IIBA (see more below)

New Courses

Each of the new courses is 21 hours, half the length of our existing courses.  To complete the certificate, students must complete two of the following:

MGMT70043 Software Testing – Available Spring 2014

Industry practice often sees Business Analysts involved with software testing.  This new course also is aligned with International Software Testing Qualifications Board (ISTQB).  Though arguably not “pure” business analysis, knowledge and skills related to software testing remain popular requirements on BA job descriptions.  Students interested in these positions will benefit from this course.

MGMT70044 Business Case Development – Available Spring 2014

The development of business cases through enterprise analysis allows Business Analysts to work with executive level stakeholders to help develop the organizations strategic plans.  Students wanting to move “beyond the project” will learn this important skillset for senior business analysts.

MGMT70045 Intro to Analytics and Big Data – Available Fall 2014

In the upcoming release of the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge, IIBA has recognized analytics and big data as one type of analysis that BAs can perform.  Students looking to join this growing industry trend can complement their BA fundamentals with this elective.

MGMT70046 Agile Methodologies – Available Fall 2014

Agile methodologies continue to grow in popularity.  Many projects that BAs are involved with operate in an Agile fashion.  Understanding how to work in this environment, and how to contribute value is important knowledge for any BA.
